Historic Chatham Flower Farm
Step into three centuries of beauty and history at Chatham Flower Farm, a hidden gem on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. This 4-acre working flower farm is steeped in heritage - originally part of a larger farm established by Rowland Savage and passed down through the Milby family for generations. The earliest part of the farmhouse dates to around 1690, with additions completed in 1800 and 1820. It offers a rare glimpse into the region’s past. At the heart of the farm is a stunning two-story barn built in 1802, now transformed into a vibrant space for creativity and gathering. Downstairs, you'll find a charming floral studio, walk-in cooler, and rustic event area. Upstairs is the Kate W. Fitzpatrick artist studio and gallery, an environment perfect for workshops. Nearby, a historic tobacco drying shed, dating back to the 1700's, is now used to dry herbs, flowers, and keepsake bridal bouquets. Every structure on the property tells a story and invites you to connect with history and nature. Surrounded by lush flower beds and heritage trees, the farm is proudly no-till and Certified American Grown. Guests will enjoy a living landscape cultivated with care, perennial blooms from the on-site flower stand, and a sense of timeless serenity rarely found elsewhere. Whether you’re interested in historic tours, photography sessions, creative retreats or an intimate gathering, Chatham Flower Farm offers a one-of-a-kind setting where history and horticulture meet.

Activity Details
Several guided tours are available that invite you to walk through centuries of Eastern Shore history, where original woodwork, evolving architecture, and pastoral views offer a unique and intimate look at a property that has stood the test of time. Vegetation Tour: Experience a Kaleidoscope of Color During the growing season, the farm bursts with life and is home to over 30 species and hundreds of flower varieties. You'll stroll past 250 varieties of dahlias, 100 types of oriental lilies, vibrant rows of zinnias, beds of graceful peonies, 150 kinds of gladiolus, and much more. What makes this floral abundance even more special? The farm’s commitment to sustainability. As a no-till, Certified American Grown® operation, Chatham Flower Farm grows without synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers. Their practices prioritize soil health, pollinator support, and long-term ecological balance - so the beauty you see is as natural as it is breathtaking. Home Tour: Step Inside a Living Piece of Eastern Shore History Explore a beautifully preserved example of traditional Eastern Shore telescoping architecture. Each section of the house tells a story from a different era: the oldest wing, dating to circa 1690, offers a rare glimpse into early colonial life. The 1800 addition, a classic two-story structure, reflects the growth and prosperity of the farm over generations. The final section, added around 1820, rises three stories and showcases a more formal architectural style that marked the mid-19th century. Just steps away stands the historic barn built in 1801, once known as Milby Place - a nod to the Milby family who tended this land for generations. Today, the barn is lovingly restored and remains central to the farm’s daily life and creative energy. Outbuilding Tour: Echoes of the Past Step beyond the farmhouse and explore the remarkable outbuildings that speak to the farm's long and complex history. Scattered across the grounds, these structures reflect both the everyday rhythms and deeper stories of life on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Among them are a charming dollhouse, which now works as a chicken coop and run, an old garden shed with the same Dutch shiplap as the barn, preserved as an important reminder of the work done over many decades. The tour also includes a historic tobacco drying shed, dating back to circa 1700's - believed to be one of the oldest surviving structures on the property. Today, it continues to serve a purpose, now used to dry herbs, flowers, and heirloom bridal bouquets. Studio and Gallery Tour: Kate W. Fitzpatrick Discover a creative space where art and landscape meet. Kate W. Fitzpatrick is a painter whose contemporary abstract oils and watercolors are deeply rooted in the spirit of the Eastern Shore. Inspired by the shifting light, wide skies, and quiet beauty of the land around her, Kate’s work captures not just what she sees, but what she feels. Whether you’re a fellow artist, an admirer of abstract work, or simply curious about the creative process, this tour offers an intimate glimpse into both Kate’s artistic journey and the landscape that inspires her. Photo Session Chatham Flower Farm is the perfect setting for your photo session with a variety of unique backdrops including fields of flowers, the barn and other historic buildings, the glass window greenhouse and more.
