Once an endless expanse of pachysandra, this area was transformed in 2023 into a multifunctional space designed to seamlessly blend outdoor living with the beauty of the surrounding woods. A stone patio now opens up to an upper lawn bordered by colorful beds filled with a mix of flowering perennials, grasses, shrubs, and small trees that change with the seasons. A few months after initial planting, the garden faced a setback when a 120 foot red oak fell, destroying much of the newly completed space and damaging the home. Restoration took time, but the garden has since bounced back. Keen observers might still spot subtle remnants of the damage, left intentionally as a reminder of nature’s resilience. Set at the edge of a serene woodland, the garden opens to sweeping views of towering poplars that offer shade and a humbling sense of scale. Deer frequently pass through, so the planting plan includes deer-resistant selections like catmint, coreopsis, iris, monarda, echinacea, boxwood, nandina, butterfly bush and more. Small trees like Little Gem magnolia and crape myrtle add variety amid the backdrop of native trees. Pollinators, birds, chipmunks, and squirrels also enjoy the space. The upper lawn is a flexible area that’s great for yoga, meditation, a photo shoot, or just relaxing in the open environment. On the patio level, a coral bark Japanese maple surrounded by hakonechloa all gold and contrasting penstemon dark towers adds a bit of zen. Lavender and stachys hummelo add pops of purple and a relaxing aromatic scent. There’s plenty of modern outdoor seating and a fire feature, making it the perfect spot to hang out with family and friends. The garden is accessible through a shade garden side path. Hostas, astilbe, tiarella, carex grass, helleborus, Japanese painted fern, heuchera, black mondo and ajuga are planted throughout.
